The symbol of the rainbow is a symbol of faith and hope. In more recent history, the 20th century saw the rainbow used to symbolise moments and movements of social change.
In 1978, the artist Gilbert Baker, an openly gay man, designed the first rainbow flag. Baker later revealed that he was urged by Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S., to create a symbol of pride for the gay community.
